Tea tools are a recommended necessity, because tea is not just any old regular drink! For many people, tea is THE most important drink of their day! Whether you need an afternoon pick-me-up, or something to calm your stomach after eating waaay too much food, there is a tea that can help you. And if you are a devoted daily drinker of tea, you should probably have the right tea brewing tools. Here are six must-have tea tools that every tea drinker should add to their jolly tea cabinet!
Honorable Mention: Quality Loose-Leaf Tea
Although the tea leaf itself is not considered a tool, it is a very important part of the process, and it deserves a mention! What is considered quality loose leaf tea? First, let me say that tea bags are not a bad thing – especially because of the “grab and go” convenience. However, what I’ve noticed is there seems to be a more intense freshness and flavor with loose leaf teas. There are a couple of things I would recommend that you look for in quality loose leaf teas: companies that use reputable suppliers, faultless freshness dates, and last but not least, a beautifully potent, fragrant aroma when you open up that tea tin and take a deep breath. Mmmmm! Bottom line: you want fresh tea!
Another benefit of loose leaf tea is that it allows you the ability to measure out the exact amount, in order to produce your perfect tea flavor. You can make your tea taste stronger or weaker, depending on the amount of leaves that you use. Now that you know the goal, let’s check out the recommended tea tools to make it happen!

Tea Tool #1: Tea Scoop Measuring Spoon
Speaking of measuring, this is one of my favorite tea tools! Like we just mentioned, you want to measure out the right amount of loose leaf tea, in order to create your perfect cup. A tea scoop will help you to be more precise with your proportions. You choose exactly how much tea you want to add to your cup, and you won’t waste any leaves by using too much in your tea. This one by Teabloom is a good choice.
Tea Tool #2: Temperature-Controlled Kettle
These types of electric kettles are essential to easily provide the perfect temperature for your selected hot teas. Different types of tea do require specific hot water temperatures, in order to achieve the best brew. Using water that is too hot can be like leaving your bread inside the toaster for too long – unless you like burnt toast, that is not an ideal situation. These kettles will help you, by heating the water up to an exact temperature.
Ideal Water Temperatures:
- Green Tea: 160°F – 180°F (70°C – 80°C).
- White Tea: 160°F – 180°F (70°C – 80°C).
- Oolong Tea: 185°F – 205°F (85°C – 95°C).
- Black Tea: 200°F – 212°F (93°C – 100°C).
- Herbal Tea: 200°F – 212°F (93°C – 100°C)
Here are three temperature-controlled tea kettles that recently caught my attention:
- Chefman Electric Kettle with Temperature Control
- Instating Gooseneck Electric Kettle
- Veken Electric Tea Kettle
They all have variable heat settings, and the water heats up quickly. Each has a unique design to match different tea drinker personalities.
Tea Tool #3: Timer
I use a timer every time that I brew hot tea. Brewing times do vary, based on different teas. That being said, I usually set a 5 minute timer, and the results turn out well for most of my teas! (See my post about how to brew the perfect cup of tea.) I usually use the digital clock on my stove or set a timer on my phone. There are also really cute tea timers available like this one by Lily’s Home Store.
Tea Tool #4: Paper Filters
I rejoiced the day that I discovered paper filters! Simply adore this tea tool! I never enjoyed cleaning mesh or metal filters. These paper filters are so easy to use! Just scoop the loose leaf tea into the paper bag, place it in your mug and pour the water over it. After the timer goes off, simply remove the paper bag and you’re ready to drink! These also work well for cold brews. Place the paper filter in your tumbler (filled with cold water) and take it with you on the go! I usually use these Finum filters. They are made with unbleached, biodegradable paper, and each bag has enough room for the tea leaves to expand with ease – and NO leaves escape into the water. I use these daily!
Tea Tool #5: Tea Bag Squeezer
If you like to squeeze as much flavor as you can out of your paper filter (or tea bag), this is the tea tool for you! Another advantage is that it prevents drips on your counter. Just squeeze every last drop from the filter (or tea bag) into your cup, and then drink up! This Orblue Tea Squeezer is a good choice.
Tea Tool #6: Favorite Mug or Cup
One of the most important tea tools of the tea drinking experience! Where would we be without our favorite cozy tea mug? Tea cups always add more enjoyment to the moment. Whether a formal and dainty cup, or a cute and inspirational mug, tea cups bring the perfect touch to whatever mood you happen to be in at that moment. Check out the Jolly Tea Drinker shop for our collection of cute tea mugs. During the summer, I also like to use this one, by Simply Modern, to keep my cold brew tea chilled throughout the day.
