Welcome To the World of DIY Lip Balm!
Did you know that you can make your own lip balm? I have been faithfully using lip balm from a great natural company for a long time, but sadly, they went out of business last year. I still have a couple of their lip glosses and am stretching them out for as long as possible. They will only last for so long, and I don’t know which company to try next, so – I decided that I want to try to make my own! I like experimenting with DIYs, it’s just so much fun to put certain items together and see what works! Hmmm, I wonder if God wanted me to become a scientist? 🤔 In either case, I have the opportunity to run my own types of scientific experiments, whenever I try a DIY project!
Homemade Lip Balm Benefits
There are so many advantages to making your own lip gloss. For one, you can control the ingredients. You know exactly what’s in the merchandise that you made. This product is going on your lips, so you may want to be even more particular about what you put in it. If you are concerned about chemicals, you can easily make your lip balm chemical free!
Natural Lip Balm Ingredients
For today’s experiment, I plan to use these:
Candelillia wax: For all you vegans out there, this is a vegetable wax. It’s great for creating a nice hedge of protection for your skin against harsh environmental elements. This will also help to hold the butters and oils together.
Cocoa Butter: Derived from cacao beans, this delicious smelling butter is excellent for moisturizing and protecting your skin, and is a great nourishment for dry lips.
Avocado Oil: Produced from avocados, this oil is highly absorbent and moisturizing, and it will soften your lips.
Coconut oil: Extracted from coconuts, it’s a healing and moisturizing oil that smells good enough to eat, and the best part is – you CAN eat it!
DIY Lip Balm Recipe
Because this is an experiment, I am working with a small batch. If you are new to DIY, this is a great opportunity for you to try a simple, small recipe!
½ tsp candelilla wax
1 tbsp cocoa butter
⅛ tsp of avocado oil
⅛ tsp coconut oil
*optional add-in: 5-10 drops of flavor oil
Yield: 4 tubes
Supplies Needed
- Tea cup warmer. (I use this one)
- Small glass bowl or container (I use this one, because it has a spout for easy pouring into the tubes)
- Small spatula for mixing and pouring
- Lip Balm Tubes (I use these)
Instructions:
- Place the glass bowl on top of the tea cup warmer
- Add the candelilla wax, cocoa butter, avocado oil and coconut oil. Allow them to melt together.
- Stir the mixture until everything is well combined.
- Remove the glass bowl from the warmer, add the flavor drops (optional) and let sit for 1-2 minutes
(I recommend waiting the 2 minutes for the mixture to slightly cool, in order to prevent the hot mix from melting the tubes. You do NOT want that oil and wax mishmash all over your counter, believe me!)
- Pour the mixture into the tubes, with the help of the spatula, to get every last drop of the wax mélange into the tubes.
(Move quickly, because the more the mixture cools, the more it will solidify in your glass dish. If it does harden before you finish pouring, just put it back on top of the tea cup warmer for a couple minutes to melt it again!)
- Once the lip gloss tubes are filled, leave them alone for about 30 minutes to cool and solidify.
- That’s it!
Custom Lip Balm Formulations
You can customize this recipe in many different ways. You can choose beeswax instead of the candelilla wax, you can try other oils or butters – it’s really up to you! That’s what makes these experiments so much fun – you get to try different variables, until you get your desired results!!
DIY Lip Balm Safety
A word of caution: always be very careful with the tea cup warmer, hot wax and oil! You don’t want to burn yourself during your experiment. I would also try placing wax paper on the table underneath the lip gloss tubes, before pouring – to ensure that you don’t mess up your counters. Because inevitably, you will spill hot oily wax on your workspace!
