Magnesium and Tea – A Magnificent Combination!

So, are you one of the many millions—yes, millions—of people who get up in the middle of the night to… well, you know, relieve your bladder? If you’re on your third bathroom run before the break of day has begun, this one’s for you!

Now, we’ve all heard the common reasons for those midnight tinkle breaks: too much fluid (guilty—hello, evening tea!), medications that treat some “extra fun” medical conditions, or my personal favorite, just getting older. (Oh, the joys of adulthood!)

But today, we’re not going to dwell on any of those things. Instead, we’re talking about one exciting possible solution! Are you ready?

Magnesium.

Okay, yes, I hear you, it sounds hard to believe! And of course, let me place my disclaimer here, I am not a scientist nor a medical professional. Please consult your doctor, or better yet, the Great Physician before you make any major dietary changes. And now, back to our regularly scheduled program.  

Yes, we’re talking about magnesium—the often overlooked key player of the mineral world! Not only can it help you drift off to dreamland faster, but it might also save you from making three trips to the bathroom every night. Now that’s what I call a helpful addition to your life!


So, What’s Magnesium Got to Do With Less Potty Breaks?

Well, magnesium participates in over 300 different processes that happen in your body—kind of like how my tea cupboard participates in every part of my day. (No, really!) But specifically, among other things, magnesium helps regulate stress hormones like cortisol. And here’s the fun and interesting fact that you’ve probably never heard before: high cortisol levels (did someone say stress overload?) can make you run to the bathroom more often than I run to my tea kettle during the cold weather months! 

When cortisol levels are up—thanks to stress, anxiety, or maybe just because you’ve been dwelling on that foolish thing that you said to that coworker last week (what, am I the only one who does that?)  Stress messes with your bladder and kidneys, in addition to other things, making you feel like you’ve got to go to the bathroom almost all the time! Not so jolly.


How Does Magnesium Help?

Magnesium SHOWS UP like your favorite calming tea blend (think lavender chamomile soothingness)! It helps lower those troublesome cortisol levels, giving your bladder a chance to chill out. Less cortisol, less tinkle trips. Sounds simple, right?

But wait, there’s more! Magnesium also helps balance electrolytes, which is a fancy way of saying that it keeps everything in your urinary system flowing effortlessly. Think of it like making sure your tea is perfectly steeped—like how the right balance of time and water temperature will  make your cuppa just right!


Magnesium and Sleep? A Dream Team.

Magnesium isn’t just helping your bladder. It also helps you sleep better by promoting the production of melatonin and GABA (and no, I’m not talking about a new herbal tea here – although that would be a cool name, right?) These amino acids help to calm your brain and relax your body, so that you can drift off to that wonderful place where you’re no longer busy toiling on tomorrow’s to-do list. And for the most part, the better your sleep, the fewer disruptions from your bladder. See how it all works together?


So…What’s the Tea?

To really boost your nighttime routine, try adding some magnesium-rich foods earlier in the evening (leafy greens, nuts, seeds, whole grains—think salad with a side of herbal tea). And while I do want you to sip on your tea, also remember to cut back on the fluids at least 2 hours before bedtime. Trust me, that fourth cup of peppermint tea might taste great, but your bladder will thank you later if you cut it off a little earlier!

Weighted blankets help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. I personally have three!

6. Plaid Flannel Blanket

Plaid flannel gives off a rustic, cozy feeling that’s perfect for the colder months. It’s like curling up by the fireplace with a good book and a steaming mug of tea!
