It’s June, Jolly Tea Drinkers, and if you’re on vacation, it’s time to take your iced teas and hang outside in the sun all day, every day! Whenever I see a beautiful, warm sunny day with an abundance of blue sky, I want to go outside and enjoy it! I always think about sunscreen, but I never use it! I know, I know, we can’t afford to do that to our skin. UV rays are too damaging for us to play around and ignore them. So this year, I want to explore some sunscreen options to see what works best for me. I prefer finding a sunscreen that is as natural as possible. So when I heard about the latest trend of green tea sunscreen, I had to explore it!
Why Green Tea?
Green tea has a very good reputation when it comes to health benefits, especially in the area of skin health. The antioxidants in green tea help the cells in your body to fight against aging and even some diseases! Increasing foods and drinks that are full of antioxidants into your diet is super beneficial for your health, and green tea is a great way to start! The latest trend in skincare is adding green tea to sunscreen to increase its effectiveness. Let’s take a look at how:
1. Enhanced UV Protection: The antioxidants work together with the sunscreen ingredients to produce stronger protection against UV rays, helping to protect you even more from skin cancer.
2. Anti-Aging Properties: Protecting your skin from the sun will help prevent damage that can cause wrinkles and age spots on your skin.
3. Soothing and Calming: No one likes to be burned from the sun. Anyone who has ever had sunburn knows it is no fun! Green tea is an inflammation reducer and can help to soothe your skin.
4. Moisturizing Benefits: The moisturizing properties in green tea help to keep your skin more soothed under the intense, drying heat of the sun.
Choosing the Right Green Tea Sunscreen
As we endeavor to choose a good sunscreen to try this month, I suggest that we make sure that it has the following properties:
- Broad-Spectrum Protection: It must protect against both UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are the ones that are more likely to cause sunburns and skin cancer. UVA rays run deeper into your skin and are more likely to play a role in premature aging, but can also contribute to skin cancer.
- SPF 30 or Higher: This tends to cover about 97% of UVB rays, and is supposed to allow you to stay in the sun 30 times longer without burning.
- Natural Ingredients: Sunscreens tend to be heavily laden with chemicals that people with sensitive skin try to avoid, so try to look for sunscreen with more natural ingredients, particularly green tea and aloe vera.
How to Use Green Tea Sunscreen
As a sunscreen newbie, I think it’s important to know how to use it!
- Apply Generously: Use enough to cover all of your skin. Leave no spot exposed!
- Reapply Regularly: Sunscreen doesn’t last all day, so you need to reapply. It’s recommended to reapply every two hours.
- Daily Use: Don’t skip a day! Make sunscreen a part of your daily skin routine. Unless you’re staying indoors the entire day, drinking tea and reading a good book, you need to make sure that you protect yourself from the harsh rays of the sun. Even when the day looks cloudy, you still need to safeguard your skin. Remember the sun is out all year round, so sunscreen isn’t just for the summer time!
