There was an eclipse?? I had no idea! 🤣 Here’s your Jolly Quick Eclipse Wrap-up!
This is all anyone has talked about for days! People planned their lives this weekend to accommodate seeing it, canceled major events, and called out sick from work, just to see this spectacular occurrence that only happens once every I don’t know how many years!
ECLIPSE BASICS
I guess I get it. It’s not something that you are able to experience everyday. And the very fact that it entices and almost begs you to look at, while the very act would most certainly cause you blindness, is something that has fascinated me, and people around the world for centuries. I mean, the phenomenon of the eclipse is a cosmic wonder to be seen, but again – you’re not supposed to look directly at it!
Quick fact: There are solar eclipses and there are lunar eclipses.
A solar eclipse is when the moon blocks the sun. A lunar eclipse is when the earth blocks the moon. Of course there are way more complicated and detailed explanations for these happenings, but those are the basics!
ECLIPSE FUN FACTS
- During a total solar eclipse, day can actually turn into night! Areas that are completely darkened, will experience a dramatic drop in temperature, because the sun is blocked!
- Sometimes, animals in a total eclipse area have been said to do unusual things – perhaps because the sudden, dramatic change in daylight can make them think that it’s night time.
- There are only a few specific areas where people can experience a complete total eclipse.
ECLIPSE VIEWING
Let’s get to the good part: how to watch it!
People travel far and wide to get to the best locations to view a total eclipse. For many, it’s considered a once in a lifetime event! Other people set up cameras to record it, so that they can safely watch it later.
I think it goes without saying, but the most important thing to remember is: NEVER stare at the sun with your naked eyes! Did you know that there are specially constructed glasses, specifically created to watch the eclipse? Glasses that allow you to actually stare at the sun – imagine that! If you’re like me, and you are concerned for your eye safety and don’t trust those glasses (or if you just don’t care that much), then you probably waited and watched the videos on social media. Either way, it was a day full of excitement across the country!
